Late eighteenth-century kitchen tools beside the cooking fire at Grand Portage National Monument, on Lake Superior in northern Minnesota. It was quite clear to us that the friendly lady overseeing the kitchen could explain and demonstrate every one of these.

One of the surviving structures at Kaymoor One mine in West Virginia. This was a thriving operation into the sixties; now part of the New River Gorge National Park. Accessible only by trail (or long stairway), now. Neat stonework.... Camera: Nikon N90s

More details from the Calumet & Hecla Drill Building , downtown Calumet, Michigan. Part of the Keweenaw National Historical Park. That wall was obviously built of rubble. But such lovely rubble, and such a fine building they made with it.
