Roses from 58th Street, NYC – 21st Street at Q Str…

From August 2011 until January, 2012 these colossal roses – the work of New York sculptor Will Ryman – adorned the lawn outside the Phillips’s Collection at the corner of 21st and Q Streets, in Washington D.C. Made of fiberglass and stainless steel, they spring up in a cluster of five with a ladybug atop the tallest flower. Painted in vibrant shades of pink and red, and over 12 feet in diameter, the structure transforms with the changing summer, fall, and winter light. The sculpture is one of eight originally installed along Park Avenue in New York City earlier in 2011. Will Ryman is internationally known for his large-scale figurative sculptures. A writer turned artist, Ryman’s work is heavily influenced by the works of playwrights and philosophers. This installation is part of 90 Years of New, a yearlong celebration of the museum’s 90th anniversary as America’s first museum of modern art.
