Two-day trip to the research center known as Mountain Lake Biological Station in southwest Virginia. We found a number of these orchids on the grounds of the research station. We were actually looking for another orchid species, but found this one in several places.

The two places we would visit on this day were Parc Boutte du Cap on Cape St. George, and Kippens Bog near Stephenville. Parc Boutte du Cap is noted for its towering cliffs, fierce winds, and Yellow Lady's-Slipper orchids in the thousands. Kippens Bog is a large but little-known bog in the village of Kippens, just to the west of Stephenville. It is known for the large number of multi-flowered Dragon's Mouth orhids. What a day we had photographing these beauties... To see more images and to read about the story, please go to Jim's Blog ...

After a tortuous drive up a mountain that seemed like it took hours, we finally arrived at the remote location, dust covered and ready to see some orchids. Well, that's just what we did! Our field trip coordinators had done their job very well. The steep slopes were sprinkled for hundreds of yards with numerous clumps of both Spotted Coralroot orchids and Striped Coralroot orchids. Since neither of these species grows near where I live, it was quite nice to see so many color forms of each of these species. What a treat!...
