In the Neolithic and the Bronze Age, stilt-house settlements were common in the Alpine and Pianura Padana (Terramare) regions. Remains have been found at the Ljubljana Marshes in Slovenia and at the Mondsee and Attersee lakes in Upper Austria, for example.Stilt houses are built primarily as a protection against flooding; they also keep out vermin. The shady space under the house eventually can be used for work or storage.

In 1902 the Inspector of Mineral Waters of the Kingdom defined Pedras Salgadas as follows: "For all the set of natural beauty, therapeutic importance and magnificence of artifices, the most beautiful Portuguese spa must be considered". At the end of the XIX century the resort registers a remarkable frequency of aquistas, among which the king D. Carlos stands out.
