It seems like everything is closing in this world. Where I live, it'll end up with no physical stores for me to shop at. And I don't really like shopping online. I like to see what I'm getting, plus I'll bet the online stores that are putting out all the little Mom and Pop stores around my area, are creating a lot of unemployment. Those Mom and Pops still like to eat, but are losing their livelihood. People aren't going to like it when they have no physical stores to shop at if the power should go off or the internet gets shut down. That wouldn't be very convenient, would it? I just found out the other day that the drugstore where I get all my prints made has closed. I passed by where they used to be and there was just an empty building - no trace of what used to be inside it. I develop all my own film, but I don't have an enlarger to make any prints, so I need places like Walgreens Drugstore, which closed suddenly, to get my prints done.

There are a lot of cornfields like this all over my area. This corn could go anywhere in the world to feed people. The lens I used for this photograph was travelling all around the world. Each person would receive it in the mail and document their area for two weeks, then pass it on. Here in Southern Illinois, we have a lot of rolling plains. So naturally, there's a lot of corn planted in these parts. Here is one vast cornfield in the Sacramento area. In the distance you can see farm buildings which dot the landscape everywhere. There are a few hills here and there, but no real mountains until you go a little further south from here. I'm not a patron of McDonald's, but Sunday morning as I was driving all over creation getting shots for the One Rokkor Around The World project, this billboard caught my eye. Those burgers did look pretty tasty! This sign was right outside the fence of the White County Fairgrounds, where they held a very nice fireworks display in honor of Indepence Day later that night. (Which I attended.) This scenic hilltop cemetary is actually fairly close to my home. Located about 2 miles west of Norris City, it is an old graveyard called Big Hill. From the slope in the edges of the picture you can tell it rests on the very crest of a hill and is probably the highest point in White County. This is a part of the Shawnee National Forest called Pounds Hollow. It is a popular swimming area for youngsters in the summer months and features a sandy beach, a snack bar/concession stand and picnic tables for families. This is a local historical landmark called the Iron Furnace, located near Elizabethtown in the Shawnee National Forest. It was built around 1837 and continued operations until the beginning of The Civil War. It is 32 feet high and built out of large limestone blocks mined locally at Cave-In-Rock. It was put into use again in 1872, and used up until 1887. In the 1930's, it was partially destroyed to supply rock rubble for the embankments of the Hog Thief Creek Bridge built by the CCC. The current appearance is thanks to a restoration performed in 1967. Today, it is the only remaining iron furnace in Illinois. The band I'm currently a member of, Deuces Wild, was hired to play at the reception of a couple who got married in nearby Carmi, Illinois. And of course, since it fell in the two-week period of when I had the One Rokkor Around The World project lens, I thought - why not memorialize it for the project? So, after finishing my duties of playing the accompaning music cd for the woman who sang a song at the beginning of the wedding ceremony, I was free to do whatever I chose. Of course I had two cameras with me and one was my trusty Minolta XD11 with the project lens attached. As soon as the minister pronounced the two married, he had them turn to each other and, for the benefit of the crowd, uttered those immortal words, "You may now kiss the bride...." Snap.... got it! At first, this horse was kind of standoffish. But, after a while, he came up to see what I was doing. He would smell my hand but wouldn't let me pet him. There were two here, but this one was the most curious. Forget about trying to photograph horses in their regular surroundings - they're too nosy about what you're doing there to catch them in a natural pose!
