Ain't Nothin' Shakin' But The Leaves On The Trees

A sudden windstorm hit my town during summer of 1980. It blew down a lot of nice, big trees all around town - and it even blew off the roof of my family's back porch. A couple shots I took of the damage it did got picked up by the local newspaper - this was one of them. A Single Pale Feather Drifting On A Tumultuous Sea…

07 Jul 2019 12 21 496
Although I knew what I wanted my picture for this week's challenge to be, I wasn't able to actually take it until 7.30 p.m. Saturday night, due to it storming and raining all week. I happened to notice there was a break in the rain, so I ran out and quickly got my shot. I have to admit, though, I think the storm clouds in the background helped to enhance my shot. I simply threw a feather up in the air, manually focused the camera at about 4 feet and with the flash on to expose the feather (as it would have been very dark on the underside had I not done so), took my shot. I had the camera on a tripod and used the 10-second self-timer so that I could be in a better position to throw the feather over the lens. (The camera was pointed almost straight up.) It only took five tries to get the one I was happy with. I also caught a flock of birds flying past in the distance, so there are more feathers - but they're all flying or floating in the air. The picture is framed exactly like I took it - it has not been cropped. Camera: Sony Alpha SLTa77v, version 1.07 Lens: Sony DT 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6, @18mm Shooting Program: Manual (of course!) ISO: 100 Aperture: F/11 Shutter Speed: 1/80 Flash: On Date: July 6th, 2019, 7.30 p.m. Place: Norris City, Illinois, U.S.A.

3 Dead

This was the house, not far from where I live and just outside of Crossville, where the man lost his life in the first tornado that struck on Wednesday. He was trying to rescue his two dogs out of the storm and sadly, they were killed as well. We have way too many tragedies due to tornadoes here.

Here's a woman looking for family mementos to salvage in the field across from the house near Crossville. It looked like a war zone around that area.

This is the storm that ripped through my area last night. It brought nearly 70 mile per hour winds with it and blew down several trees in my town. This shot was taken at almost midnight, in case you wondered.
