The sun before it disappeared below the horizon. But fortunately, it came back the next day.

The total eclipse of the sun just passed right over my house here in Southern Illinois. I took this picture at 1.05 p.m. CT, Monday, April 8th, 2024.
This is the second total eclipse I've seen in my area and I don't have the words to describe what they're like. It gets real dark and quiet, and the totality of the eclipse really shines up in the sky. It's an awesome experience.

A sunrise over my Dad's shop at the time. I've posted this before, but I did a new scan and probably got a more accurate rendition this time.

The view toward the west out my upstairs window. Sunsets are so interesting because the are unique and you never see the same one twice.

There were some clouds moving in when I took this picture, so I thought it would make a good pallette for my submission this week. The theme this week for the Saturday Self-Challenge group was to "capture something in motion using a shutter speed of at least 1/500." The sun travels through space at 220 kilometers per second, so it moves at a pretty good clip. The clouds weren't moving quite that fast, but they were ever-changing.

Another shot of the total eclipse I saw yesterday, August 21st, 2017. This one was taken a couple seconds before the other one I posted and shows more of the corona.

This picture was taken during the last total eclipse over Amerca, back on February 26th, 1979. It's actually an image taken of the television screen, probably during the evening news, as it didn't quite reach totality here where I live.

1984 Solar Eclipse
| 20 Aug 2017 |
|
There was a partial solar eclipse that happened on May 30th, 1984. Here's a sequence of shots I took of it from out in the countryside around Enfield, Illinois. The reason it's not very clear is because I was using a small 50mm lens instead of a longer one. It was a multiple exposure taken on one single frame, so if I'd used a longer lens, I wouldn't have been able to get as many images on it. Taken with my Minolta XD11 and Kodak Tri-X 400 speed black and white film.
