Halse Lodge

Called in for morning coffee at the oldest house in Noosa Heads, Queensland, to take this photo. 1881: A survey was made of the land adjoining the Town Reserve, Little Cove ... the Land Ranger advised that the area was definitely not suitable for selection and that the scrub was of great attraction to visitors. That was the genesis of the Noosa National Park. Eighty acres at what is now Noosa Heads were transferred to Walter Hay, the person credited with successfully finding a route from Gympie to the Noosa River, leading to the subsequent establishment of Noosa Heads. 1882: On that land Walter Hay established the ten roomed residence Bay View, which became the first boarding house at Noosa Heads. Progressively enlarged and renamed Hillcrest Guest House, the building was rebuilt to a Federation bungalow style in the 1920s. Purchased by the Anglican Church in the 1950s, it was renamed Halse Lodge, after Archbishop Halse. Substantially renovated in 1988, it is the only existing guest house remaining in Noosa Heads from the turn of the century and one of the few sites in south east Queensland operating continuously as a seaside guest house from the late nineteenth century. It is now listed on the Register of the National Estate. (The Noosa Story recounts that in 1889 the population of Tewantin stood at 148; in 1905 there were just five houses at Noosa Heads, two of them guest houses.) (Noosa Library Timeline) Halse Lodge is now a popular YHA, and retains much of its colonial charm.
