Sunday challenge - Every Picture Tells a Story.
Lay day in Elba (30 March 1986). Walked up to Napoleon's house, Villa dei Mulini, and then to Forte Falcone. Magnificent views.

Built in 1548. Fort Falcone has an area of 2360 square metres, and along with Fort Stella and the Linguella Tower, is one of the three "backbones" of the defence system of Cosmopoli (the name given to Portoferraio by Cosimo l) Cosimo 1 de' Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany 1519-1574

The Palazzina dei Mulini, (the yellow building on the left) also known as the Villa dei Mulini, was one of Napoleon Bonaparte's two residences in Portoferraio during his exile on the island of Elba (May 4, 1814 - February 26, 1815). It was primarily intended for the exiled emperor's public and ceremonial life, while his private life was spent in the nearby Villa di San Martino.

With its characteristic butterfly plan, the Piazza di Spagna is one of the most famous images in the world, as well as being one of the most majestic urban monuments of Roman Baroque style. In the Renaissance period, the square was the most popular tourist attraction in the city: it attracted artists and writers alike and was full of elegant hotels, inns and residences.
At the end of the seventeenth century, it was called Trinità dei Monti, after the church that dominates the square from above, but it was later given the name we know today after the Spanish Ambassador who lived there.

The Colosseum, or the Coliseum, originally the Flavian Amphitheatre (Latin: Amphitheatrum Flavium, Italian Anfiteatro Flavio or Colosseo), is an elliptical amphitheatre in the centre of the city of Rome, Italy, the largest ever built in the Roman Empire. It is considered one of the greatest works of Roman architecture and Roman engineering.

Skippers meeting on quay. Into town to change money, buy mugs and hangers. Lovely atmosphere in Juan les Pins. Typically French pavement cafes, etc. Very sophisticated boutiques and very sophisticated prices!

In Antibes, preparing to set sail for the Island of Elba.
Out for warm up sail at 12 noon. Out past islands round to Cannes. Interesting having a wheel instead of tiller. Much easier really. We all tried our hands at the helm. Laurie has least experience, having only dinghy sailed before. Bill took some time to adjust. We decided to motor through gap between islands and Cannes to return as we had a radio call from Geoff asking us to present passports to port police. Good sail after gap.

In Antibes, preparing to set sail for the Island of Elba. Ian, Gill and Laurie. Juan Les Pins Marina.
We had travelled by train from Victoria to Dover, then ferry to Calais and overnight train to Antibes.
Stowed everything on board. Magnificent aft cabin for us. John in forepeak. Laurie and Bill in saloon. Did some provision shopping in Juan les Pins. Also pricy. Back to boat. Champagne to christen 'Pagoda', our home for three weeks.
