Sunday challenge 138 Map/s.
I was born in Southampton, Hampshire, England and lived there until I was eighteen. My father’s family had lived on the Isle of Wight, having moved there from Dorset in the 1800s. Loved the New Forest, spent my first 5 years living there, and then my parents and I moved back to Southampton, for my school years. Later, in the 80s, Ian and I did some sailing courses on the Solent, Day Skipper and Coastal Skipper, and as part of the training sailed around the Isle of Wight at night. After that we chartered yachts on a couple of weekends and sailed round the Isle of Wight again, in daylight.
Many fond memories of this place.
The Solent lies between the Isle of Wight and mainland Great Britain, about 20 miles long, a major shipping lane, with a double high tide good for deep-draught ships. Loved by the yachting community, with an interesting coastline, many beautiful anchorages and villages/towns.

Photo of a vintage photo, with a friend, at West Wellow in Hampshire, England, where my parents had a few acres and a cottage on the edge of the New Forest.
We had pigs, chickens and a cat.
A wonderful place to spend my early years, mostly with Mum and her sister. Dad worked in Southampton, which was not far to travel. It must have been on his motorbike at the time, as I don't think he had a car until mid 60s. Wearing my sun hat.
Clearly neither of us were particularly happy about being in front of a camera :-) I love this photo. The colours are pretty authentic, compared to the original photo.
Sunday challenge... ageing. This photo was taken in the 50s, so I really don't look like this any more :-) However I do have a very similar hat... see comments for a photo in January 2019

Southampton, Hampshire, England.
The iconic era of the 1920s.
The 1920s was a decade that began on January 1, 1920 and ended on December 31, 1929. It is sometimes referred to as the Roaring Twenties or the Jazz Age, when speaking about the United States, Canada, or the United Kingdom. In Europe the decade is sometimes referred to as the "Golden Age Twenties" because of the economic boom following World War I.

My great grandfather worked for the London and South Western Railway in Southampton.
c1897 to1909, he and his family were living in Battersea and he was a Railwayman at the Vauxhall Nine Elms locomotive works. The locomotive works were transferred to Eastleigh between 1908 and December 1909, so he and his family moved in 1910 to Bishopstoke, Eastleigh, Southampton, where he was a Hammerman for the London South Western Railway Company.
He had previously served in the Army, awarded the Egypt Medal being "in the operations up the River Nile and in the vicinity of Suakin 1884-85". His name is listed on the medal roll.
