Photo taken arriving from the Sunshine Coast, on a Jetstar Airbus A320. 49,000 years before present: In the northern Flinders Ranges at Warratyi indigenous people settled in the oldest known human site to date in SA. 1836: 28 December: Governor John Hindmarsh and settlers arrived aboard the Buffalo, and the province of South Australia was proclaimed. 1831: Collet Barker surveyed Gulf St Vincent, and climbed Mount Lofty. 1833: The South Australian Association was formed in Britain to establish a colony. The next year the South Australia Colonisation Act passed in Britain to establish a free-settler colony. 1847: The first Barossa Valley winery was established at Jacob’s Creek. Hardys wines est. 1853 in South Australia. Thomas Hardy came to Australia from Devon. He first worked with John Reynell, South Australia’s first winemaker. In 1850 he married Johanna and bought his first property Bankside. He bottled his first vintage in 1857. In 1870 he launched his Oomoo range – named using the local aboriginal word for ‘good’. In 1876 he purchased the Tintara vineyards and winery in McLaren Vale. First Australian wines to be awarded two gold medals at the International Wine Shows in Bordeaux 1882 and Paris 1889.
