94/365 2026 a story of John Oxley

At the bicentenary celebration on Saturday 20th October 2018, two (double sided) information boards were unveiled on either side of the memorial. The information boards tell a summary of both his life and of his expeditions to find the inland sea, how Harrington Village was started and the naming of the Manning River which Oxley called a Lake, at Harrington, at the entrance of the Manning River. The inscription says:— "In honor of Oxley, who, in 1818, explored the country from Bathurst to Port Macquarie. During this expedition he discovered Liverpool Plains and ranges, the Peel River, Mount Severn, overlooking Port Macquarie, and the Manning River, which he crossed here on October 22, 1818." The commemoration tablet was donated by Mr. George S. Hill, of Bungay. This is embodied in a concrete structure rising about 5½ feet, surmounted by an anchor from H.M.S. Tomahawk..."
The Memorial was unveiled September 14, 1929.
The Oxley park is adjacent to Club Harrington, on the bank of the Manning River in Harrington, NSW Australia.

Caloundra Lighthouse
| 05 Nov 2022 |

The Caloundra Lighthouses, constructed in 1896 and 1968 respectively, provide a rare opportunity for comparison and demonstrate the evolution in marine navigation along the Queensland coast over 100 years.
Twenty years before the existence of the first light (Moreton Bay Pile Light, Brisbane), a deep water shipping lane into Moreton Bay and the Port of Brisbane known as the North West Channel, was sounded. The channel went from Caloundra Head along the eastern shore of Bribie Island and soon became the most used entry into the port. In shipping terms this made Caloundra’s position strategically important…
The old Caloundra Head Lighthouse is the oldest building in Caloundra…
The precinct was listed on the Queensland Heritage Register in 2010.

from my old stamp album.
The first Bulgarian postage stamp was issued in 1879.
When the Second Bulgarian Empire collapsed in 1396, all the Bulgarian territories south of the Danube River became a principality within the Ottoman Empire. The Bulgarian struggle for independence during the 18th and 19th Centuries led to the April Uprising in 1876. The brutality of the Ottomans, in putting down the uprising, resulted in the Russian Empire declaring war on the Ottoman Empire in 1876. The Russian forces, with the aid of many Bulgarian soldiers, were victorious.
On March 3, 1878, as a result of the Treaty of San Stefano, Romania, Serbia, and Montenegro became independent kingdoms, and Bulgaria became an autonomous principality within the Ottoman Empire. The self-governing Principality of Bulgaria would not actually be free of Ottoman external control until October 5, 1908, when it became the Kingdom (or Tsardom) of Bulgaria.
Of course, Bulgaria has an impressive (recorded) history, dating back to the 5th Century B.C., as part of the Ancient Greek geographical area known as Thrace, the Thracian province of the Roman Empire, and even as an Empire in its own right. These historical roots have been well documented on the postage stamps of Bulgaria.

Wauchope, New South Wales, Australia
The Wallace sawmill in Bain Street provided much of the timber for the early buildings in Wauchope, including Jacaranda House 1888.
1888
The Australian Joint Stock Bank transferred from the shop premises beside the Hastings Hotel to the building in Cameron Street. (Now "Jacaranda House", the home of Mr. Neils Brown and family). This branch closed in 1897.

The stylish, distinctive building was formerly the headquarters of the Hastings Co-op, and then became a hub for the town’s creative activities.
The building now has a studio for yoga and pilates classes, as well as therapy rooms, and the Wellness Collective.

325/365 Noosa Shire Council Chambers
| 22 Nov 2015 |
|
|
This served In Pomona, Queensland, as the Council office from 1910 to 1980. A historic and characterful town in the Noosa Hinterland, at the base of Mount Cooroora, an ancient volcanic plug. When strolling around Pomona it is interesting to imagine life in the early pioneering days. The railway station was for many years the heart of the town. The North Coast Railway between Yandina and Cooran opened in 1891.
By 1910 the Shire of Noosa had a population of 2000. The first local government election was in April with James Duke elected as the first Shire Chairman. There was divided opinion about whether to establish the office in Cooroy or Pomona. After a referendum Pomona became the shire centre.
In 1910 the Shire boasted about half a mile of gravelled road and only six bridges. The balance of traffic (mostly bullock teams) just followed tracks through the scrub.
Today it is a charming country town with many interesting buildings, and the street names are very aptly named…
Pottery Street, Church Street, Rectory Street, Factory Street, Mill Street, School Street, Mountain Street, Station Street, etc.
QWERTY Keyboard

The arrangement of characters on a QWERTY keyboard was designed in 1868 by Christopher Sholes, the inventor of the typewriter. According to popular myth, Sholes arranged the keys in their odd fashion to prevent jamming on mechanical typewriters by separating commonly used letter combinations.

Taken en route home, after a trip to Point Vernon for a few days.
Maryborough was founded in 1847, was proclaimed a municipality in 1861, and became a city in 1905. During the second half of the 1800s, the city was a major port of entry to immigrants arriving in Queensland from all parts of the world.
The name was derived from the Mary River which was named in 1847 after Lady Mary Lennox (1790–1847) the wife of Sir Charles Augustus Fitzroy, then Governor of the colony of New South Wales.

In Kent Street, a two storeyed masonry building opposite the City Hall. It was constructed in 1887-8 to the design of Melbourne and Adelaide architect, John Harry Grainger. It replaced the first Maryborough School of Arts which was a small brick building constructed in 1861 soon after the establishment of a local School of Arts committee in 1860.

Abell Point Marina

We travelled with Cruise Whitsundays from Hamilton Island, via Daydream Island to Abell Point. The impressive marina has at least doubled in size since the last time we visited.
An outline history of the marina is in the first comment. The first settler and land owner of the area now known as Airlie Beach was Thomas Abell, from Herefordshire in England.
With direct access to the Whitsundays 74 Islands and Great Barrier Reef, Abell Point Marina is located in Airlie Beach, North Queensland, 30 minutes from Proserpine Airport or a ferry transfer from Hamilton Island Airport. Protected by its uniquely designed iconic breakwater, Abell Point Marina is the largest marina of its type in Australia, giving it the well earned reputation as the tourism, transport and recreation hub of the Whitsundays region.
