From our trip in October 2024.
On the corner of Flinders and Swanston streets in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, Australia's oldest train station.
The station was completed in 1910, and the upper floors were purpose-built to house a library, gym, and lecture hall, later used as a ballroom. Its 708-metre main platform is the fourth longest railway platform in the world.
Today, heritage-listed Flinders Street Station is the one of the busiest suburban railway stations in the Southern Hemisphere, with over 1500 trains and 110,000 commuters passing through each day.

From our trip in October 2024.
Situated along the Yarra River (the land around Birrarung) and opposite the iconic Flinders Street Station, Federation Square is a public place for creative expression and an area of cultural significance to First Peoples.
Federation Square is the centre of creativity in a city that's built around innovation, art, leafy green spaces, a flowing river and contemporary cultural activities and festivals. The gathering place's unique architectural shape has seen the square recognised on the Victorian Heritage Register, making it the youngest building in Australian history to gain heritage status.

236 Flinders Lane, Melbourne, Australia
A very enjoyable trip to Melbourne in October 2024.
Manchester House was constructed in 1911-1912 to a design by architects, Bates Peebles and Smart, and marked the entry of the old Adelaide clothing manufacturers, G & R Wills and Company, into the Melbourne clothing industry centred on Flinders Lane. It is a substantial reminder of the role of the rag trade in Flinders Lane early this century.

Established in 1885, John Higson and Sons made harness, collars, trunks, portmanteaux, travelling bags, taggings and all descriptions of leather goods, particularly saddles. They also provided tents and tarpaulins, whip thongs and laces, fishing lines and cricketing materials... Romanesque style.

Named after Australian musical heroes AC/DC, Melbourne's AC/DC Lane is the physical embodiment of Melbourne's enduring love affair with grungy rock 'n' roll.

Saturday challenge - Dramatic photography
The world's first cable tram system commenced operation in San Francisco in 1873.
This invention, and the progress of the San Francisco system, had been closely watched by an American transport entrepreneur and Melbourne businessman, Francis Boardman Clapp. Clapp set up the Melbourne Omnibus Company with William McCulloch and Henry Hoyt, bringing organised street public transport to Melbourne.
In 1877, Clapp bought the Victorian patents of Andrew Hallidie's inventions and changed the name of his company to the Melbourne Tramway & Omnibus Company.
Melbourne's first electric tram began operation on 14 October 1889

We lived in Melbourne for a couple of years and this restaurant in South Melbourne was a favourite.
Owned, at the time, by Iain Hewitson self-styled as "Huey", who is a New Zealand-born (from Otaki) chef and author who moved to Australia in 1972.
His latest TV show is Huey's Kitchen.
