krishna sanskrit pop mania

Cut-paper collage with acrylic paint. Going for the Indian pop aesthetic of "more is more," I built this collage in layers: —Indian woodblock print background —straight lines in red paint —4 images (2 on each side) from Hindu mythology —central figure of Krishna manifesting his multipart divinity in the Bhagavad Gita —12 little photos of Indian aluminum clothespins On top I painted a verse, 3 Sanskrit words, from the Upanishads—pronounced "tah-rah-tee" (purple), "show-kahm" (orange), & "aaht-mah-veet" (turquoise). My rough translation: "When you know yourself deeply, you overcome suffering."

good mail day

Cut-paper collage postcard created for the Kollage Kit theme: "Air." The classical element of air is traditionally associated with the mind and nervous system, so I went for a parachute dropping a letter straight into the mind of a French gentleman, as dissected by 19th century surgeon J. B. M. Bourgery. (Lithograph by N. H. Jacob.) In response to his mail, this man speaks the Sanskrit word for inner peace or mental tranquility, pronounced "SHAHN-tee." Background is a topo map of the Black Hills National Forest in South Dakota: a map is also an illustration of air energy, because it's a mental construct about a physical space.
