Corporation Marshes, Walberswick, Suffolk

05 Nov 2010 274
This is a view over the Corporation Marshes, Walberswick, Suffolk looking southerly towards Dunwich Forest on relatively high ground in the distance. A depression with its associated warm from is rapidly moving in from the west. It was raining within three hours of this photo being taken. The North Sea is just out of shot, over the shingle bank on the left. This whole area is a Nature Reserve, home of bittern, marsh harrier and avocet, among others. The tower of the derelict Walberswick wind pump is visible just right of centre. At times of high spring tides coinciding with a tidal surge down the North Sea, this area is flooded by the sea. Just a little way further south, towards Dunwich, the Environment Agency plans to discontinue maintaining the shingle bank sea defence and let the area revert to estuary.

Sky, sea, beach and marshes

A southerly view over Corporation Marshes towards Dunwich from Walberswick beach. There is not much separating the sea from the marshes. At times of high spring tides coinciding with a tidal surge down the North Sea, this area is flooded by the sea. This whole area is a Nature Reserve, home of bittern, marsh harrier and avocet, among others. However, the Environment Agency plans to discontinue maintaining the shingle bank sea defence and let the area revert to estuary. A depression with its associated warm from is rapidly moving in from the west. It was raining within three hours of this photo being taken. I love the wild bleakness of this stretch of coast and its big skies. This photo is a panorama consisting of 5 frames stitched together.

Originally uploaded for the Guesswhere UK group. Best viewed at largest size. This is a panoramic view south-east looking over the Walton Hall marshes towards Walton on the Naze, Essex. The Naze Tower is visible on the skyline. It is 86 feet high and dates from 1720, built by Trinity House as navigation aid to shipping. www.nazetower.co.uk/ I took the photos in an attempt to demonstrate that the field levels are below sea-level in places. The panoramic view covers an angle of about 100°.

Salt marsh near Walton on the Naze

Salt marsh and tidal creeks near Walton Channel and Hamford Water, near Walton on the Naze, Essex, England. The view is to the north-west and north, with Dovercourt and Harwich in the very far distance. I really love this sort of landscape. A very fragile environment. Reeds Windpump Contrail

The Walberswick windpump stands in the midst of a sea of reeds. The aircraft contrail somehow adds to the scene rather than detracts. Such lovely big skies here.
