The nearby seal was so inert that I feared it might be dead, but it did move a flipper eventually. The seal from the previous picture is in the distance, headed towards the ocean.

Taken from a point just north of San Simeon and south of the main elephant seal viewing area. At the time, there were about 8 elephant seals lying either on the grass or on the shore line. It was difficult to capture a sense of their actual size. They're quite huge. Per one Wikipedia, males get to be about 16' long and weigh about 3 tons, while females are typically about 10' long and 1 ton. Considering the size of the seals seen that day, these appear to be mature males. At it's widest point, the one in this picture appeared to have a girth of about 4' with a length of easily more than 13'
