On the very eastern side of Hart Mountain, you descend into a valley with Steens Mountain in the distance. There is a very dramatic backcountry byway on Steens Mountain, but both years I was there the snow had been unusually heavy and the road was still not passable in mid-July.

As you begin to climb up the west slope of Hart Mountain, you begin to get a perspective on the lakes to the west of it. I don't know the name of the mountain further west.

This is looking east after crossing the highest part of the mountain. The eastern side was very dry with no woods. (Almost the same spot as an adjacent picture taken at a different time)

The next several photos are of a trip across Hart Mountain, which is in south eastern Oregon. The landscape in SE Oregon is nothing like what one imagines when thinking of Oregon, its more like high desert with very long vistas. Most of the road across Hart Mountain is graded gravel.
