Big Morongo Canyon Preserve

Big Morongo Canyon Preserve. The preserve is about 40 miles north of Palm Springs just off CA 62 (well-signed). It is a relatively small park with an interesting combination of former ranch lands, marsh, riparian woods, and desert. It has many short trails through which, when combined, make a nice loop of about 5 miles. The park is managed by the BLM, but was originally started with land bought by The Nature Conservancy.

About 20 miles from Palm Springs is the Coachella Valley Preserve. The preserve is a mix of rocky hills, palm oases and a sand dune. There are some interesting oases that are very hidden, the nearby pictures are of the oases that are most accessible from the visitor center. The Nature Conservancy was an active partner in the early development of the preserve and continues to play a part in the funding of it. A similar arrangement created the Big Morongo Canyon Preserve which is north of Palm Spring on CA-62.
