SF Nob Hill: Mark Hopkins Hotel 2966a

Back of the Mark Hopkins, with view of the restaurant at the top. Taken from Powell Street. It used to be easy to get into the restaurant to see the view, but that appears to no longer be the case.

Typically referred to as Masonic Hall or Masonic Auditorium, the Nob Hill Masonic Center is a striking building at the top of Nob Hill across the street from Grace Cathedral. The building was completed in 1958 (see adjacent pictures).

Windows in the entrance area to the Masonic Center -- I did not find a description of the windows. The picture is taken through a glass door, thus there is some reflection in the picture of Grace Cathedral, that was behind me.

A sculpture at the entrance to the Masonic Center -- I did not find a description of the sculpture.

This is called the Memorial Sculpture. Each of the figures represent a branch of the U.S. Armed Forces. To the right of those figures is a depiction of a tug-of-war that is to represent the global struggle between good and evil (per their website). Below the frieze is the statement "Dedicated To Our Masonic Brethern Who Died In The Cause Of Freedom"

I've always enjoyed the elegance of the lobby area, particularly when it is decorated for the Christmas holidays.

SF Nob Hill: Fairmont Hotel 2968a

Back side of the older tower portion of the Fairmont Hotel. I had forgotten that it had balconies with iron grillwork. Unfortunately, the more modern brick section in the lower right of the picture is also part of the Fairmont.

SF Nob Hill: Cable Cars 2967a

Cable car on Powell Street. Year's back you could ride the cable cars with a standard Muni fare, but now they're a separate (and expensive) fare. Back then they were interesting to ride in the winter at night, giving a different perspective on the city. The California Street cable car was usually the most enjoyable, since there were regular commuters that used it and it wasn't as crowded with tourists.

SF Nob Hill / Federal Building 2980a

Looking down Taylor St from Nob Hill, the large building in the distance with the unusual roof is the San Francisco Federal Building.

SF downtown: Hotel Beresford Arms 2981a

I'd not noticed before the windows of the Beresford Arms....
