The climb into the mountains west of Callalo (on the Pony Express Trail) was beautiful, with increasing trees and over-growth -- though the threatening rain/snow storms made it a little intimidating. On the road was a turn-off for Gold Hill. Gold Hill was interesting, but like many 'abandoned' mining towns there was still some mining activity going on and there was a surprising number of people living there, so I've few photographs of it. BUT, the Bureau of Land Management description of Gold Hill (see the picture) is a good description of the how and why mining towns are boom and bust town.
