Bristlecone Pines at Great Basin National Park. Whenever I'm in a Bristlecone Pine preserve I find it difficult to comprehend the environments that these 1000+ year old trees have survived.

Curve sign (lower right) ..... Or, looking across into Utah from Great Basin National Park. The long road going up (in the picture) is an unpaved rural road heading northeast into Utah. US50, the primary highway in this area, runs across the picture next to the lower of the two long green strips across the picture.

Along the road from Baker to Great Basin National Park is the turnoff for the "School of the Natural Order". The very remote location, the name of the school, and the story of the founder (see website www.sno.org )make it sound as if this would be a bizarre cult, but a reading of some of the teachings sounds surprisingly similar to what many of us teach in Sociology.

Along the road between Baker and Great Basin NP are a series of bizarre art installations. Considering the remoteness of the area, the art seems particularly bizarre.

Ranches across the plain, from the Great Basin road, in the late afternoon sun. Somewhere through this landscape is US 50 and the Utah border. The distance to the mountain range is roughly 10 miles. It's difficult for me to fathom what it would be like living this remotely.

Baker, NV, at dusk. Baker is the nearest town next to Great Basin National Park. There were two restaurants here and another one just up the road. One night, only one of the restaurants was open -- and this was during the busy summer season.

A protest monument at the Border Inn, which is on the Nevada/Utah border about 7 miles east of Baker. The protest is about efforts by the Las Vegas area water district, which is about 300 miles south, to use the aquifers from central Nevada and nearby Utah to fill the water needs of the Las Vegas area. The bucket shown here is much larger than it might look -- the ladder on the right side is the size of a ladder used in a pool.
