Samoa Peninsula Eureka, CA1151z

Wood processing is still big industry in Eureka. This picture is of a processing plant south of downtown Eureka -- the picture was taken from the Samoa peninsula. The orange colored mountain at the end of the conveyor belt is redwood chips.

Another abandoned structure on the Samoa peninsula, next to the bay. It doesn't quite look like a warehouse, so I'm not sure what it was.

Though the equipment on the dock looks to be in fairly good shape, other factors suggested that this was an abandoned operation. From the looks of the rusted equipment in large paved areas next to the dock, my guess is that this was a point for loading wood chips onto ships. Note downtown Eureka in the background.

South of Redwoods National Park is Humboldt Lagoons State Park, a very pretty area. In this picture, that is US 101 running across what looks like a fairly fragile sand bank.

Elk River covered bridge 1166

Just south of Eureka, on Elk River Road, are two one-lane covered bridges. I had never heard any mention of these and they don't seem to promoted as tourist destinations (there are no signs for them) -- just simply older bridges on side roads leading to dairy farms.

I'm increasingly finding the architecture of older movie theatres to be rather interesting. The signs somehow convey a sense of elegance even at small town theatres, and I wonder if the use of vertical signage was intended to mimic how towers are used on governmental, educational, and religious buildings to suggest 'rising above' ordinary life.
