'Ten Cities Express' timetable - Summer 1972

The 'Ten Cities Express' operated between Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Coventry licenced to a number of big company operators most of which became part of the National Bus Company. The service had its origins with the Fawdon Bus Company which started the service in 1928. In 1933 Fawdon was acquired by the West Yorkshire Road Car Company on behalf of the ‘Limited Stop’ and ‘Yorkshire Services’ pools and following the acquisition revenue north of Leeds was shared by Northern General Transport, North Western Road Car, West Yorkshire Road Car and Yorkshire Woollen District. South of Leeds it was shared by East Yorkshire Motor Services, West Yorkshire Road Car Company, Yorkshire Traction Company and Yorkshire Woollen District. Due to there being so many different companies involved, the road service licence for the service was held in the name of the Fawdon Omnibus Company registered at the offices of Northern General in Bensham. Since no vehicles were owned by Fawdon a hiring permit was granted by the Traffic Commissioners with Northern General Transport, West Yorkshire Road Car and Yorkshire Woollen District being the prominent operators. The Fawdon Company was wound up in 1962 and the different pool members then held separate licences (which then included East Midland Motor Services, Lancashire United Transport and United Automobile Services). It was at this time the service became marketed as the ‘Ten Cities Express’. The feeder services shown in this timetable to/from Halifax and Huddersfield were actually timings covered by the Blackpool-Barnsley service J7 (later 217) of the 'Yorkshire-Blackpool' pool operators.

Yelloway NNC 850P in Rochdale - Sep 1978

31 Mar 2014 508
September 1978 - For a number of years Yelloway always added six AEC Reliances to the fleet usually with Plaxton bodywork. However, in 1976 the intake was for four coaches with Plaxton bodywork and two with Duple Dominant bodywork. NNC 850P was 11 metres long and fitted with 45 reclining seats. The other Duple coach, NNC 855P, was 12 metres long and fitted with 49 reclining seats and survives as the home of the Yelloway Museum. NNC 850P was pictured here on Milton Street (at the rear of the Yelloway garage) in Rochdale one Sunday morning. It shows the destination display of ‘X35 BURY’ and had operated the Saturday overnight northbound run of that service via the south Lancashire towns of Leigh, Atherton and Swinton etc - towns once the heartland of Lancashire United Transport. In fact, the service had originally been operated jointly by Yelloway and LUT following an audacious attempt by LUT to register its own Swinton-Cheltenham service. Later when LUT was absorbed into the Greater Manchester Passenger Transport executive its coach services passed to National Travel. In the 1976 exchange of services between Yelloway and National Travel, Yelloway assumed sole operation of the X35.

Yelloway/Lancashire United joint service X35 timet…

An audacious attempt by Lancashire United Transport for approval to operate a service to Cheltenham from their operating heartland naturally brought forth objection from Yelloway. The end result was the creation of a joint service numbered X35 that picked up in a number of towns from where passengers would have previously travelled by LUT bus into Manchester to then go south on the Yelloway 'Devonian' service. Revenue was apportioned accordingly with Yelloway taking either 94% or 96% to LUT's 6% or 4% - I can't exactly recall the actual numbers. (Leigh is approx 16 miles from Manchester and Swinton approx 7 miles. Manchester to Torbay is around 280 miles. An average of say 10 miles for the LUT portion out of the total of 290 miles equates to approx 3.5%)
