Captured outside of the Skye Museum of Island Life at Uig on the Isle of Skye. The late afternoon September light catches the lichen covered standing stone at the roadside and in the background the preserved thatched cottages, seven in total, reveal the secrets of 19th century crofting life.
Inside the museum visitors can see a family home complete with simple furnishings, a smithy, a weaver's house and a ceilidh, or meeting house, along with an array of crofting tools and equipment. There are also archives, including the story of Flora MacDonald, who smuggled Bonnie Prince Charlie to safety disguised as a spinning maid.

Trumpan Church View

|
Captured at Trumpan Church, Waternish Peninsula on the Isle of Skye.
The church was destroyed in 1578 when the MacDonalds of Uist arrived by boat and landed under cover of fog. Finding their enemies the MacLeods at church they barred the doors and set fire to the church killing everyone inside.
the alarm was raised and the invading MacDonalds were killed in the 'Battle of the Spoiling Dyke', - reference to the way the bodies of the MacDonalds were thrown into the dyke , their bodies deemed unfit for a proper burial
I have added a song by Scottish band Runrig called
The Greatest Flame

Storm over Blackhouses PiP HFF!
| 06 Jan 2022 |
|
|
|
Taken at the Skye Museum of Island Life. When open visitors can wander around this island 'village' and get a real understanding of how harsh island life could be. From the largest of the crofts to smithy, barn, weavers' cottage and Ceilidh House the crofts or 'blackhouses' are equipped as they would have been around the close of the 19th century and feature tools used at the time and even an old hand loom.
Each croft would have bagpipes, a fiddle or Jewish harp as this was the their entertainment through the harsh winters, and the Ceilidh house was their meeting place. The Ceilidh House has a gallery of photos of island life in it today.
A peat fire provided heat and was where the cooking was done and lighting was by a cruise, a lamp burning fish liver oil.
Caught in the light before the approaching storm the crofts look quite attractive. I have added a black and white version in the PiP which I felt fitted the mood of the harder times back then.
I have added some Ceilidh music in the form of The Drams Ceilidh Band and 'Strip the Willow'

Black faced sheep on Skye. Their Ear Tags looked a bit like earrings so I have added 'The Earring Song' by Gretchen Wilson. The lyrics - 'Don't Make Me Take My Earrings Out' made me smile, just as these curious sheep did.

Magical Quiraing

Part of the Quiraing on Scotland's magical Isle of Skye. Sitting on the Trotternish Ridge it is said to be the Uk's most mysterious and beautiful Jurassic landslide. Legends have it that it is the meeting place of fairies and home to the dragon said to protect the island from invaders.
With all that magic in the air I have added 'Magic' by Pilot

An Otter Fence - HFF!
| 26 Apr 2018 |
|
|
|
Taken from outside of the Bright Water Visitor Centre at Kyleakin, The centre took its name from the title of the book 'Ring of Bright Water' by naturalist and author Gavin Maxwell. This was one of a trilogy of books about his life and adventures with otters. 'The Rocks Remain', another book in the trilogy, features Teko, one of the otters who lived with him, and is the subject of the sculpture above. It was presented to the centre by its sculptor, Laurence Broderick. Gavin Maxwell bought the disused lighthouse cottage on EILEAN BÀN (the White Island), which is a small island below the Skye Bridge, where he wrote, and also reared otters. He died in 1969 and Teko died shortly afterwards.
Beyond the fence can be seen the remains of Casteal Maol, or Castle Maol, or Castle Moil as it is known.

Elgol, Isle of Skye. Skye is known as 'The Misty Isle' and the weather can be very changeable, going from stormy to sunny or misty and back again in a very short space of time.It looks as if a storm is brewing here so I have added 'Changes' sung here by Storm Large.
