Near Covadonga Basilica, with Europe Peaks as background. In 711 the Moorish Omyad Army invaded the Iberian Peninsula, defeating the Christian Army in the Battle of Guadalete, Cadiz, Andalousia. The goal being occupying the whole peninsula, they advanced northwards. In the difficult mountains at north, a local Christian Army under the leadership of Pelayo succeeded in defeating the Moorish invaders in 722, in the Battle of Covadonga. The Christian warriors acclaimed Pelayo as king of the region.
