It stands at Barbacã Square, Vila Nova de Milfontes. Brito Pais was born in this village in 1884 and became a bold airplane pilot. In 1924 he flew from Amadora to Vila Nova de Milfontes with an airplane conceived for an amazing deed: a flight of 16,000 km to Macao. Vila Nova de Milfontes was a remote village, 50 km far from the nearest railway station and 20 km far from the nearest road; yet, it had a long runway to allow a take-off with 1.5 tons of fuel, plus Brito Pais, Sarmento Beires (another pilot) and the mechanic Manuel Gouveia. They started their flight in April 7th 1924 and landed in Macao on June 20th. This monument is a tribute to the pilot born in this village and was inaugurated in 2024. Brito Pais died in 1934, at the age of 49, in a sad airplane crash. HFW!
