This was the bedroom of King Peter IV in the Palace of Queluz. He died here in 1834 with the age of 35. Being born in this palace in 1798, he went to Brazil with the royal family in 1808, when Napoleon army invaded Portugal. With the royal family at Rio de Janeiro, this city became capital of Portugal and Napoleon could not consider the European territory of Portugal his kingdom. King John VI returned to Lisbon in 1821, appointing his eldest son Peter as Regent in Brazil. Prince Peter decided to join and lead the independentist movement in Brazil, becoming Emperor Peter I in 1822, when Brazil became a free country. After the death of his father in 1826, he was declared King Peter IV of Portugal, in spite of his contribution to the independence of Brazil, being emperor of this country until 1831. Still in 1826 he decided to appoint his daughter Mary as Queen of Portugal, but his brother Michael (absolutist) was taking hold of the power, against the liberal supporters. Emperor Peter I decided to return to Portugal, appointing his son as Emperor Peter II of Brazil. The Civil War between absolutists and liberals lasted from 1828 to 1834, when liberals defeated the absolutists. The former Peter IV of Portugal (former Peter I of Brazil) died soon after the end of the war, and his daughter Mary II could at last be an effective queen. Her defeated uncle was considered king during the Civil War, when he controlled most of the mainland, but liberals controlled the Azores and considered Angra do Heroísmo capital of Portugal. Historians are not consensual about the beginning and the end of reigns in those troubled times. Peter IV of Portugal (Peter I of Brazil) had a quite long name: Pedro de Alcântara Francisco António João Carlos Xavier de Paula Miguel Rafael Joaquim José Gonzaga Pascoal Cipriano Serafim de Bragança e Bourbon. (!!!) I wonder how old was he when he finally memorized his full name...
