At Skógafoss in very nasty weather, even nastier than on my last visit: www.ipernity.com/doc/523247/45213160 The photographer wanted the waterfall without the tourist hordes;-)

Wet, wetter, Skógafoss

Skógafoss is a 15m wide and 62m high waterfall where the Skógá river tumbles down the cliffs of the former coastline. It lies in Katla geopark between Eyafjallajökull and Katla volcanoes.

Gljúfrabúi, the hidden waterfall, lies at the foot of Eyjafjallajökull volcano and is part of Katla Geopark. It is just 600m from much better known Seljalandsfoss and much less crowded. To get to the waterfall you either have to wade the stream or balance on wet rocks and once you are in front of the falls you get a full shower - I stayed outside;-) See note for context.

Akstaðaá

One of the many glacial rivers coming down from Eyjafjallajökull that vehicles have to ford on the way to Þórsmörk.

River crossing

On the road to Þórsmörk: ford over Jökulsá, the river originating from Gigjökull , an outlet glacier of Eyjafjallajökull. This is an adapted 4x4 that can adjust tyre pressure from within the car (see the cables leading to the tyres). Usually a driver has to get out of his car and reduce the pressure before going on mountain roads. A tyre of our bus (correct pressure, not a puncture):

F249 to Þórsmörk runs alongside the western slopes of Eyjafjallajökull ( After an unplanned absence- summer flu- I'll try to catch up in the next days )

Seljalandsfoss Rainbow

I didn't fancy queueing to go behind the waterfall this year and was rewarded wih a rainbow. In the note a 2016 photo from behind the veil, the parking lot spoils the view.

Gigjökull

Panorama stitched from 10 verticals. EXIF: Canon EOS 6D, EF24-70mm f/4L IS USM- 55mm, ISO 400, F13, 1/320 Gigjökull (Crater Glacier) comes down from the top of Eyjafjalljökull and can be seen from the F-road to Þórsmörk. The photos were taken from the end moraine. Before the notorious 2010 eruption this was a famous beauty spot with pristine blue-white ice and a glacier lagoon with icebergs swimming in it. After the eruption the lagoon had disappeared, in its place were ash and volcanic debris and the glacier was a black stump. 12 years later it has started to recuperate though there's still plenty of ash. www.katlageopark.com/geosites/eyjafjallajokull-gigjokull-steinsholtsjokull

Surely a troll!

Þorvaldseyri was one of the farms hit hardest by ashfall. At the new visitor centre a video of the eruption is shown.

The hidden waterfall

Gljúfrabúi, the hidden waterfall, is just a short walk from better known Seljalandsfoss. Lying under Eyjafjallajökull volcano, it is 40m high and mostly hidden by palagonite rocks in front of it. Getting a nearer view involves scrambling up the rocks or wading the river, both can be hazardous. Vertical panorama stitched from 6 photos.Inset a detail and the falls seen from a distance. www.katlageopark.com/geosites/seljalandsfoss-gljufrabui stuckiniceland.com/south-iceland/the-hidden-beauty-of-gljufrabui Gljúfrabúi, der vesteckte Wasserfall, ist einen kurzen Spaziergang vom bekannteren Seljalandsfoss entfernt.

Seljalandsfoss

Seljalandsfoss lies at the foot of Eyjafjallajökull and drops 60m over the cliffs of the former coastline. One can walk behind the waterfall but depending on the wind direction you can get rather wet.
