The eggs have their fishy foes surrounded! (Originally posted to flickr on February 3rd, 2011.)

Here's the inside front cover. Aside from these lavish all-American meal displays, there's not much happening in the 36 or 44 pages (depending on which year's volume you're perusing). At one point a Coldspot penguin gives various food prep instructions, and a demure blonde hausfrau looks likes she's asking one of the freezer models out onto an off-site dance floor. But they lacked the weirdly-hued bravado of these photos.

They attempt to disguise the foreign influences using the traditional brown/green/white configuration of all proper American meals, but he's not fooled...

Look interested through all of this even though you're dreaming about prime rib. ;)

I used to have cats who thought soybeans were groovy snacks. But the current one prefers bits of turkey. :)

(L) Yeah, you could get "petals" to look like that using only diluted cream cheese and a spoon. By the way, Kraft has enclosed a coupon good for 50 cents off your next purchase of swampland in South Jersey. (R) That clam dip might not be bad, though the seasonings are pretty intense for the time period. Probably that was a snack you only brought out in the small hours for the serious partygoers, long after the kids were safely in bed.

Upper left: A tisket, a tasket, the wrong olive's in our basket! Lower left: Twenty vegetable varieties in search of a fish stick or a slice of canned meat. Right: They served the pineapple-cheese-green olive-cherry salad-combo at baby showers, so everyone who attended could feel as pregnant as the hostess.

So... 40 miracles... 500 foods (or thereabouts) and three different label names (Batavia, Ferndell, & Richelieu). While the company itself had yet another double-barrelled name. (See Picture No. 1) No wonder this stuff isn't still on supermarket shelves. Even the people running the company probably couldn't keep track.

"The Heart of Milk" ... Uh, pretty surreal as slogans go. Or weirdly reminiscent of Dorothy Parker's story "The Custard Heart." Either way, not exactly conducive to warm romantic fuzzies at mealtime. From Sunset magazine.

If you can assemble an explosive canister, you can put up great pasta sauce! It's easy!

No recipes included for asparagus, though. :(

"...See that the shrimp are covered with sauce and bake 10 more minutes at 350. Serves six." Even without a date given, the color scheme alone would shout "SIXTIES!" Wouldn't it? Some other recipes included: Chicken Divan, Breast of Chicken With Wild Rice And Orange Sauce, Turkey Tetrazzini, Chicken Fricassee, Chicken Cacciatore, and Chicken Royale.
