Cité de Carcassonne

The Cité of Carcassonne is a medieval fortified city located on a hill. It is situated to the southeast of the modern city. Its origins date back to the Gallo-Roman period, and its development into a fortress took place during the Middle Ages. The fortified city is surrounded by a double wall with a total of 52 towers. The main buildings within the still inhabited Cité are a castle and a church dedicated to Saint-Nazaire-et-Saint-Cels). In the 19th century, the already decaying Cité of Carcassonne was restored and rebuilt under the direction of Eugène Viollet-le-Duc. This resulted in a well-preserved, extensive historical monument, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997. The Cité attracts around 3 to 4 million visitors annually, making it one of France's most important tourist attractions. I've already uploaded many photos I've taken here in the past, so ll not add more now.

It was added to UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites in 1997. With 4 million visitors a year, it is the city's main tourist attraction and one of the most visited destinations in France. The river Aude runs in the foreground.

Late in the evening the Nefertiti Quartet performs on the Place Marcou, in the center of the "Cité de Carcassonne". Very young, modern, groovy - enriched with surprising improvisations. The Place Marcou is nice, but not perfect for a performance, as it is filled with restaurant tables and there is not much space for the audience, that came for the music - and not for dinner. The restaurant "Les Cours de la Cité" offers a shady terrace and serves a delicious cassoulet. The area around Carcassonne and Castelnaudary is the "homeland" of this traditional dish. lescoursdelacite.com/index.php?lang=en

The "Théâtre Jean-Deschamps" is in Carcassonne´s "Cité Médiévale". It is in the back of the basilica Saint-Nazaire, where once was the cloister. The venue exists here since 1908 and has a capacity of about 5000. This evening it was fully booked. The majority of the audience was British!
