Decazeville developed from the small medieval village of La Salle. From the 16th century onwards, coal was mined on a small scale and shipped via the Lot and Garonne rivers. In the 19th century, coal mining gave rise to a flourishing metallurgical industry. In 1826, Élie Decazes founded a company to develop coal and steel production. In 1834, a new town was founded, which was named Decazeville in honor of Élie Decazes. Blast furnaces and coking plants were built. This industry reached its peak in the early 20th century, with 9,000 workers. Today, little remains of this industry. The last mine in the region was closed in June 2001. And Decazville today has a population oif about 5.500. It appears that there was unfortunately no demand for either the "Cote Sud" or the "Vue sur Mer"
