Loddes – Saint-Pierre

Loddes is a small village (just over 150 inhabitants) in the Allier departmen. The church was founded in the 11th century by the monks of the powerful Cluny Abbey and belonged to the French Revolution to the Cluniac Priory of Marcigny. The main attraction of the church is the wall painting that decorates the apse. Christ in Majesty, surrounded by a tetramorph, is placed on a kind of bench that follows the curve of the architecture. Beside Jesus stands Mary, crowned by an angel. The colors red ochre and yellow ochre still belong to the palette of Romanesque painters, but the supple draperies point to the early years of the 14th century.
