Agios Georgios Phalandras was the fortified church of a monastery that was founded in the early Venetian period (16th century) and was in operation until its destroyment and dissolution in 1821. The place name ‘Phalandras’ is probably a corruption of the word ‘filanda’ (textile factory) and refers to the fact that the monks reared silkworms. This place is probably the place known as Melikas, where St John the Stranger (= Ioannis Xenos) founded a monastery in the 10th century.
