Valencia de Alcántara is a small town (pop. 5000) just 8 kilometres from the border with Portugal. As more than 40 megalithic dolmens in the surrounding area prove, the area was already inhabited in the Neolithic period. Around 1213, the area was reconquered by the troops of Alfonso IX of León. At the end of the 15th century the town was incorporated into the Spanish crown. The Cromlech de las Lanchuelas is relatively small
