The Musée d’Orsay is an art museum located on the south bank of the Seine, opposite the Tuileries Gardens. The building was originally the Gare d’Orsay, one of Paris’s main railway stations, built for the 1900 Universal Exposition, it served long-distance trains until 1939. In 1801, French Minister Jean-Antoine Chaptal selected fifteen cities in which as many art museums as possible would be opened to display the large number of works of art collected/confiscated during the Revolutionary Wars and the Napoleonic period. Caen was chosen as the cultural capital of Normandy. After several relocations of the collection, part of the museum burned down in 1905. The building, renovated in the 1930s, was then completely destroyed by air raids in 1944. It wasn't until 1971 that the new, modern building in the Château de Caen, designed by Jean Merlet, was inaugurated. Claude Monet (1840 - 1926) Etretat 1885

The Alte Nationalgalerie (Old National Gallery) on Museum Island is a museum with 19th-century works of art from the collection of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation. Designed by Friedrich August Stüler on behalf of King Frederick William IV from 1862 onwards, it was completed in the Neo-Classical and Neo-Renaissance styles by 1876. The building was severely damaged during WW II by bombing. It was reopened in 1949, but reconstruction took until 1969. Between 1998 and 2001 the museum was extensively renovated.
