This white-tailed bumble bee was found a few hours ago in a state of cold-induced torpor. After some sugar water and a good warm-up she found the clematis flowers most interesting. Some minutes later, she regained the power of flight and departed. . en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bombus_lucorum

About ready to take off, I think. The wings have been tested ! About 15 seconds later she was airborne again.

Next stage, after the sugar water, is to warm her up. Either in a cupped hand, or in sunshine.

Bumble bee's bum ... she buzzing so everything's shaking ! as she works her way around the antirrhinum flowers. At least she is big enough and heavy enough to open the flowers - there was a much smaller honey bee trying the same trick earlier, but she couldn't get in and went back to the brambles.

Bee on patrol. During the day, various bees from the colony using this nest box can be found flying circuits around outside, usually the area patrolled is no more than a couple of feet away.

Rosa rugosa 'alba' with added Bombus lucorum [white-tailed bumble bee]. As happened several times this summer, I heard the distinctive "buzz" of a large bee working in the roses. After some exploring and careful watching I found her in this barely open flower. Just as well I found her when I did, because she flew off after this one, having filled her leg pouches.

Finally caught one of the bumble bees landing on the lip of a foxglove. [further identity info to follow : foxglove - Digitalis purpurea and the other leaves are from Rosa rugosa bee is a Bombus lucorum , the white-tailed bumble bee]
