cls[25] - playpen

29 Jun 2025 19
Almost at the top of the steep bit on the playpen circuit. It doesn't look that steep, but that boiler is heavy - as is the trailer -and the approach to this bit is quite short. Basically, build up a head of steam, pick a gear and go for it ! Some very happy people playing with their toys ! [Note : I didn't say boys and their toys, as several engines / rollers at the rally had lady crew [steering and driving]

The trailer with the small boiler that the Fowler "Providence" was towing around the arena as "heavy haulage" [There was a much bigger example in the "playpen"]

csg[22] - launch boiler

This van had what looks like a steam launch boiler tucked away. [I suspect the ground was too soft]

TiG (rail) - that must have hurt

What happens when a boiler explodes ... this is why, these days, there are two safety valves, water gauge glasses, fusible plugs and so on. Plus loads of rules, tests and training on safely operating pressure vessels. [No idea when or where this incident took place, and therefore no knowledge of the fate of the footplate crew. It looks like standard gauge and the track is flat-bottom with dog-leg spikes not pandrol style clips]. Not my image ; Fair Use & educational purposes.

Narrow gauge locomotive boiler. Probably from a 2ft gauge "Quarry Hunslet" similar to "Una" that is out in the main quadrangle.

nsm - boiler 2

Vertical "de Winton" steam locomotive boiler. This is from an engine named "Chaloner" that I have had the pleasure of riding behind a few years ago, when it was visiting the Porthmadog area.
