A reef in the River Tyne estuary, notorious as a danger to shipping. Exposed at low tide, but hidden under water at high tide.

The site of a shipwreck - the Adventure - that was the spur for the competition to design of early, self-righting lifeboats such as that submitted by William Wouldhave, and those built by Greathead ...

wst[24] - Flood barriers, Newcastle Quayside
| 17 Apr 2024 |
|
On Monday, 8th April 2024, 163 feet [180m] of flood barriers were put in place on Newcastle upon Tyne's Quayside. The area under the swing bridge is a little lower than the surroundings. This was in preparation for high Spring tides on Monday and Tuesday, 9th April 2024, with more heavy rain forecast for the same period - the aftermath of Storm Kathleen. [Probably taken from the High Level Bridge]
HWH - Hexham Bridge {2 of 2}

A closer view of the fourth Hexham Bridge over the River Tyne. It was completed in 1793, as the three previous attempts from the first in 1767 - at or near this point - had all been swept away by floodwaters. The cutwater appears to have accumulated some debris during recent winter storms.

WR (O&A) - River Tyne - pulling away

Pulling away from the dock / Quayside in Newcastle upon Tyne after the lunch break, about to pass under the Millennium Bridge [the pedestrian blinking eye bridge]. Overall, the row raised several thousand pounds for the RNLI.
image recently forwarded to me.

Nice image of "ice pancakes" on the River Tyne at Hexham, December 2022.
These small scale ice circles appear to have formed within areas having surface eddies in otherwise slow moving water.

olb - lifeboat regatta Tyne
| 30 Oct 2016 |
|
This postcard was labelled as a Tyne Pilots convention. I disagree. It shows a Lifeboat Regatta, these took place as regular challenges between lifeboat crews to time rowing over a set route. Of course, "visiting" crews had to get there, and local "lightweight" boats such as Rubie class "William Riley" would have had *some* advantage. It is possible that Pilots would be crew members, along with local fishermen and seafarers.

WR(O&A) Tyne - Scotswood

The old Scotswood Rail Bridge, the design is for six "hogback" girders spans on five cast iron columns (it just carries utility pipes since the rail route was closed in 1982 and then lifted).

I am surprised that this length of rail is still here, as I assume that it was dropped off the viaduct above many years ago. (edited to add - rail disappeared around early November 2013 )
E2A - having taken my chance to look more closely - provided by a very low water episode - this rail is one of several used as reinforcement in the concrete apron but it had been cut off.

River South Tyne in spate (again)
e2a - the object poking up in the air is a length of standard gauge rail, that was being used as reinforcing of the concrete apron under the viaduct. It "disappeared" soon after, I assume removed as scrap by an opportunist.

Late December 2012, another very high spate for the River South Tyne.

After snow, wind and heavy rain (which was even worse in Scotland) the river was in a real spate yesterday. Got this shot in the morning - 9th December 2011 - the river level has dropped quite a lot.

The Blue Bridge at Haltwhistle over the Tyne, framed by summer leaves. As the river is in a low flow state there is quite an expanse of gravel and pebbles to be seen.
