Five out of six female pheasants that are visiting our front garden - the sixth one was walking to a point behind the pampas grass while I was setting up the camera. These are probably recently released birds that have gravitated to a regular food source, probably encouraged by the resident couple ... Our semi-tame male [Hercule / Herki] will be pleased to have a larger "harem" in the spring.

This is the fifth wren's nest I've spotted this year - probably the same male, as he uses dry sedge stems and moss in almost the same style - in the area close to the house and garage. This explains all the LOUD courtship singing we could hear in the spring / early summer.

That is, I think, a wren's nest ... The male builds several nests, and sings [loudly] to advertise to potential mates. She chooses a nest and matters proceed in the usual way ... [I don't think this one has been used, but I will get a very careful look at the end of the nesting season - note that wrens sometimes roost communally in old nests]

Hercule is scratching around for some dropped seeds ... and finding a few, judging by the "I've get food" chuntering going on ! [the trap is us trying to catch a small mammal, that we think might need some tlc] [the empty feeder had dried mealworms in it earlier]

The three inches of snow, topping solid ice in the bird-bath. A nice welcome to 2025 ! There's a dish of water for them just out of sight in this view.
