A spectacular view from the spot at the top of Hartside Pass [on the A 689 - Penrith to Alston] - the cafe was popular with those on two, three and four wheels. It burned down 6th March 2018, cause not known, but the Penrith fire engine had to follow the snowplough up the hill, the weather was that bad ! The roof collapsed during the fire, but no-one was hurt. Plans for have been made, discarded and the site sold - new plans passed in 2024 ...

HWH - old water tower

The room under the old water tower has had several incarnations ... currently [2025] it is a small, part-time cafe. Should be Open Wednesday to Sunday, but if it was open ... no customers today.

STR[H] - Hickins' [aka the Crossing Cafe]

Crossing Cafe - aka Hickins - is in this end of the Station Building at Alston. This is the upper terminus of the South Tynedale Railway [STR]. Currently [2023] an extremely dog-friendly establishment, that also does a good range of drinks, cakes, snacks and light meals for humans. We are regular, if not frequent, customers.

This complex of buildings includes the old school [furthest away from the camera] which is currently unoccupied. There was also a small cafe here, which was popular with cyclists, but sadly, it has been closed for some time ...

The refurnished but original Brooklands Clubhouse still contains a little, but very decent cafe. [The hot coffee was very welcome !]

Mock station which is actually a cafe/bar - from that platform you can look across to the R.Tay and the railway bridge. They were open, but very expensive and unwelcoming to those who didn't want alcohol with everything.
