SoS[26] - Clematis

15 May 2026 1 10
The clematis - an old variety, with quite small, pink flowers - has produced quite a show this year. That is despite me giving it quite a thinning out a few months ago. It is very attractive to bees, as are the brambles - grown so I know that they haven't been sprayed with anything noxious !

SoS[26] - Apple blossom

15 May 2026 1 6
Despite a bit of drastic pruning earlier, the apple trees seem very blossom heavy --- just hope we don't get a late frost or strong winds / heavy rain before the pollinators have done their work. The last few years we have been lucky, and got good crops ...

Mrs bumble bee is working very hard in the cherry blossom

gdn[26] - "spring bedding" [HFF] [Explored]

09 Apr 2026 14 22 98
Bought and planted out a few plants into the "pretties pots" - I suppose you could say "Spring Bedding" I could add a few more flowering plants later in the month, technically we *could* still get a late frost ... I will, probably, add a row of smaller pots at the front. I might re-arrange the pots again, depending on how the existing contents grow. The fence at the back makes a good windbreak. The brick edging is because as the soil is very soft, the lawn tends to break away - and it allows me to build up the soil in flower beds.

SoS[26] - Shooting up

02 Apr 2026 4 1 68
My potted Rhubarb has got going at last ... It's about to get top-dressed & weeded. [It's up there to keep it away from the wildlife - mainly rabbits - that ate other crowns to death in previous winters].

SoS[26] - open at last ! [Explored]

Pollen Alert ! The Goat Willow catkins outside my window have responded to the warmer sunshine ...

SoS[26] - extra daylight in march

17 Mar 2026 3 3 77
Inforgraphic from the UK's Met Office, pointing out how the daylight hours increase over March. I live to the west of Newcastle, so I estimate that there will be about 2 hours 15 minutes "extra" daylight by the end of the month. [and, hopefully, both warmer and calmer weather !] not my image : fair use & public information

SoS[26] - even more 'drops

17 Mar 2026 2 1 62
Another area with many snowdrops ... [Please excuse the mess, It also needs a bit of a tidy-up after the strong winds this past winter and some tree surgery done a few weeks ago]

SoS[26] - getting there

14 Mar 2026 1 36
The first buds are almost open, on the naturalised daffodils growing in the "wildwood" ...

gdn[HC] - the 2026 leading bud

Leading twig on the horse chestnut looks almost ready to break.

SoS[26] - Tete-a-tete

14 Mar 2026 2 1 50
One of the patches of Tete-a tete miniature daffodils burst into flower, almost without being seen, as they are somewhat hidden up the far end of the garden.

SoS[26] - snowdrop drifts

14 Mar 2026 2 1 48
Just one of the drifts of snowdrops showing that it is spring here. There are several large patches of naturalised Galanthus on the garden - after flowering has finished, a few more will get moved into the wildwood.

SoS[26] - Hazel catkins

14 Mar 2026 5 51
Looking up at Hazel catkins ... [ Corylus Avellana Contorta (Corkscrew Hazel aka Harry Lauder’s Walking Stick) ] That *might* explain a few of my recent sneezes !

SoS[26] - sunshine on snowdrops

22 Feb 2026 4 8 129
Small clump of early snowdrops, benefiting from a little sunshine [as opposed to the snow & rain that's been battering the area recently]

SoS[26] - first daffs [HWW]

22 Feb 2026 10 7 104
This bank of daffodils in Carlisle are usually early to show, and some are already flowering - despite a bit of a battering from recent wet & windy weather. The wall behind basically holds up the railway, and makes this area quite a sun-trap ... . [added to HWW 25Feb2026 = 4 stars, 2comments and 21 views]

SoS[26] - first lambs seen [Explored]

18 Feb 2026 12 6 111
At last ! a sign of spring I've been waiting to see - Lambs ! Farm very close to Birdoswald had a few ewes and their lambs pottering in the field in front of the farmhouse - rather "rough" grazing, with all that sedge ! Spotted as we drove past this afternoon - on a personal diversion as the main road was too busy & had temporary traffic lights with long queues ...

SoS[26] - early [?] snowdrops {1 of 2}

27 Jan 2026 32
Some of our snowdrops are beginning to show their white buds, and a few are even opening. There's a lot of debris on the ground after the recent windy weather.
