I think this rather splendid light purple flower is actually a globe artichoke. A perennial, grown for the flower buds. They can grow into quite large plants.

The towers and turrets are topped with the letters E and S plus a coronet. [see also the in-camera zoomed image]

Memorial to the men of the 1st Parachute Brigade that was formed here in 1940. The school of Airborne Forces trained personnel here for D-day and the Normandy Landings. [This established links between the Paras and Hardwick which are maintained even today]

Just outside the converted buildings in the stable yard [NT shop*, cafe, toilet facilities] is this roped off picnic area, with more seating and tables beyond the fence. Behind me is a van selling ice-creams etc. {*Some extra fundraising is achieved with a second-hand bookshop and plant sales}.

Interesting shape - sadly the plate telling the observer about this sculpture is missing.

I was quite surprised to find this 7-spot ladybird as I walked around the orchard path.
