This is a replica Supermarine Spitfire Mk1A, dating form the Battle of Britain in WW2. It represents the plane flown by Squadron Leader Darley, OC 609 Squadron. yorkshireairmuseum.org/supermarine-spitfire-i 609 claimed 85 enemy aircraft shot down during the BoB, and were the first squadron credited with 100 victories. Later Sqdn Ldr Darley received the D.S.O. and he dedicated the medal to the pilots and ground crews without whom the service would not have been achieved.

One of the two "tandem" Spitfires is taxying back to their base ... Not the easiest of planes to drive along the ground - the view forward is not good ...

Look just behind the B-17 - one tandem Spitfire just taxying in and the second just finishing on the runway. A few minutes previously, these two had "beaten up" the runway - a fast, low-level pass - before going onto their final circuit and landing. Sounded wonderful ...

Supermarine Spitfire, Mark 24 [the final variant]. Built 1947 by Vickers Armstrong. Served with 80 sqn in Hong Kong, last flight 30th Sept 1955. Retired & put on display from 1968.
