BtC - on the down train {2 of 2}

We have been staying at OrangeHaven [Whitehaven, Cumbria] for a few days. Today, we had a lovely meal, outside in the sun, at the Wasdale Head Inn. On the way back, detoured past L'aal Ratty, only to find Perkins - the small, yellow diesel at work on a passenger train. So we took a ride, with Bella, on the last train of the day down to Ravenglass. Then we went to St Bees for ice-creams.
Bella started off very happy & interested in the train ride, but was a touch discombobulated by the sounds of the airbrake and Perkins' air horn. But by the time we arrived at the terminus, she seemed to be herself again.

TiG - small caravan

Tiny caravan being used as a base camp for a small family group visiting Wast Water in The Lake District.
.
The authorities have taken a leaf out of the Gwynedd Council / Snowdonia National Park's play book and made the road & verges up to Wasdale Head a clearway ie a no parking zone.
I can see that there has been too much damage to the roadside landscape from cars, including the problem of parked cars blocking up the passing places. A small number of parking areas are already provided, but I think more will be needed.
whn - reflected Saltaire

Saltaire & her neighbour [Rocking Horse ?] are reflected in the water of West Strand ...
The dropping water level has revealed a small amount of rust staining on the quays.
[please try to ignore the ugly carbuncle peeping up over the Old Quay]
SoS[25] - goat catkins
06 Apr 2025 |

The goat willow catkins are almost all fully open now. Luckily, the east wind is tending to keep the pollen out of the house - I know when it hasn't, as I usually sneeze !

Just two of the many picnic tables around the Wasdale Head Inn.
We've just had a "Sunday Lunch" sitting outside in the sun, which was beating down from a cloudless sky !
{still a little too early for Herdwick lambs, unfortunately. Although there were plenty of others to be seen}
SoS[25] - first lambs of 2025 {5 of 5}
27 Feb 2025 |
|
Hadn't seen any lambs locally [by the third week in February] so we went looking and eventually found these little ones over by Penrith.
To be quite honest, open-field lambing seems to have been very late in the North of England this year, and in parts of Wales as well. Maybe the grotty weather this time last year resulted in a late "tupping" season for this year [Tupping is putting the rams in with the ewes].

SBB[24]/dwb{6/6} - helicopters
06 Sep 2024 |
|
Well, that was interesting - those tiny specks are five helicopters out of the six or seven that have just flown overhead, playing follow that chopper, but too far apart to get into one shot. [Put "Notes" around them, Nos.1,2 and 3 are particularly small / faint]
SBB[24]/dwb{1/6} - Derwentwater Beach
06 Sep 2024 |
|
The gravelly beach [almost no sand as such] at the NE corner of Derwentwater [basically, Keswick beach].
Bella's wandering about, including splashing into the water. Despite being offered water, she's had a go at drinking the lake !
SBB[24]/dwl{9/9} - happy ears
06 Sep 2024 |
|
Towards the end of the circuit [aka cruise around Derwentwater] now, and Bella has come to terms with the launch, the engine and the spray from the bow wave. She is now looking around with great interest.
SBB[24]/dwl{8/9} - watching
SBB[24]/dwl{7/9} - Alert
06 Sep 2024 |
|
Finally, Bella sat up enough - and being on our laps helped ! - to see over the gunwale.
SBB[24]/dwl{6/9} - island
06 Sep 2024 |
|
The departing launch is just passing a small island, with a single tree - which *may* fit the description for one in the "Swallows & Amazons" series by Arthur Ransome.
SBB[24]/dwl{5/9} - departing wake
06 Sep 2024 |
|
Launch now departing ... and throwing up quite a wake. [Some of the launch drivers seemed to be in a tearing hurry, and I was wondering if the queues were slowing things down significantly, and if the Lakes speed limit was being bent / broken - I felt we were doing more than the official limit on a couple of occasions].
