Under way and out of the sea lock at Whitehaven.
I suspect her lower yards are positioned like that to avoid the lock control building.

Composite image showing a ship exiting Whitehaven in the days of sail [some level of artistic licence has been employed !] and the afternoon departure of the Galeon Andalucia.
She does rather fill the sea lock !

whn[25] - froth clumps

The high tide "waterfall" over the inner sea lock gate is creating a lot of "froth" - and clumps of this are being blown over into this corner of the harbour.

This morning's tide is very high, so part of the C2C sign is underwater.

Incoming - two swans just landing !
15 swans - I think three or four of them were juveniles, as in still had grey / cygnet coloured plumage.
Yes, the water is still orange with "rust" from mine water, and has been since about November 2022. Some of the swans are somewhat stained, but a trip out to sea seems to get them clean again.

There is an 8.3m high [spring] tide outside the sea lock, and a certain amount of seawater is allowed to overflow the gates - although the marina is already quite full with the rusty water.
This is producing quite some froth, and the wind is blowing some of it across towards the Fish Quay.

"Cracking" the outer gates open by a small amount at high tide is part of the usual process needed to "flush" the marina. Sadly the present pollution by mine waste water is largely preventing that.

The "froth" that is created at the sea lock - due to very high tide - has been blown across the harbour.
Note also the "rusty" colour, due to untreated "mine water" entering via a small culverted beck - this has been happening since Nov 2022.

Extreme High Spring Tide. [30th September 2019]
There is sufficient water in the sea lock to overtop the inner gates, although the marina is already quite full.
(It is usual to allow some exchange of water, usually accomplished during "free flow" when both sets of gates are opened. With a tide this high, the gates are closed during the highest part - so there are two "free flow" sessions)

Pampero setting off for another trip to either the drilling rig or one of the wind farms, they'll light the blue touch paper once beyond the entrance between the outer harbour piers.

Locking in to Whitehaven, at about the lowest tide our draft would permit. We will have been away from our pontoon for around seven hours by the time we are moored up.
The life ring, visible to the left, is attached to the Womble, which is in the lock as another yacht is anchored in the outer harbour, with some minor engine trouble, and may need to provide a tow.

Locked back into the marina at just about the lowest tide we could. The Miller has less draft than the rest of the boats in the cruising group.
