waf - tunnel ?

Spotted this feature as we returned to the car. Not at all sure what it is !
More likely to be a lime kiln, although the area below looks to be a "hush" , in which case, it could be an adit / lead mine.
The OS Map I consulted isn't detailed enough at the scale I looked at - will investigate further ...
waf[25]/bri[25] - Crossgill bridge
| 13 Jul 2025 |
|
This sturdy stone bridge - single arch - crosses the River South Tyne gorge at Crossgill.
waf - pine cones

|
just over the fence I spotted this small pile of pine cones - it wasn't the only one !
waf - confluence
| 13 Jul 2025 |
|
Thanks to the lack of rain, these two streams were difficult to see in such low flow conditions.
The River South Tyne enters from the top and Ash Gill [beck] joins from the left ...
A slightly larger River South Tyne leaves to the right ...
waf - Ashgill Force
waf - oooh, an orchid
| 13 Jul 2025 |
|
Looking at my copy of Keeble-Martin, I think that is an example of Orchis fuchsii / Dactylorhiza fuchsii - but I could be wrong. There was a decent sized clump of them a little further alongside the path, however, I wasn't too keen on getting any closer to the edge - it was a long drop onto rocks.
waf[25] - Ash Gill Force

|
Ash Gill Force, being quite gentle today, thanks to the lack of recent rainfall.
The arch above and behind carries the B6277, which links Alston & Middleton-in-Teesdale.
waf[25]/bri[25] - lower cascade {3 of 3}
| 13 Jul 2025 |
|
One of the lower cascade series, a little way below the main force, on Ashgill Beck [Ash Gill], before it gets to the River South Tyne.
The plant with the white / cream flower spike is meadowsweet.
You cross over using this bridge and climb a little way further up to the main Force, just visible under the road bridge in the distance.

There's quite a deep pool at the base of this one.

waf - was walls

|
This heap of stones used to be the sharp corner where two walls joined.
Couldn't decide if it had been a barn, another type of building. or just field walls.
waf - foxgloves
| 13 Jul 2025 |
|
Patch of foxgloves growing under the trees.
There's a deep gorge - River South Tyne - hiding in the shade under the trees.
waf[25]/bri[25] - bridge over tiny tributary
| 13 Jul 2025 |
|
To me, those look suspiciously like very old railway sleepers - the four holes corresponding to the bolts for the chair that held the rail.
They form a remarkably solid bridge over a tiny trickle of water making it's way into the South Tyne - which is just to the side in a deep gorge.
waf - River South Tyne
| 13 Jul 2025 |
|
A deep and narrow gorge eroded by the River South Tyne, as seen from Crossgill Bridge.
[flowing away from the camera, so looking roughly North West, having looked at the OS Map]
The twigs are the upper branches of the remains of a tree jammed into the rocks just past the bridge.
