Set of caulking tools ... hammer [quite a light one !] a caulking chisel [caulking iron], some cotton, wool or oakum [old rope picked apart] and some tar or pitch [or pine resin] The hull and decks of a wooden ship "work" as the planks move against each other under pressure from wind and water, this lets in water ... to keep the water out {as much as possible} the gap is kept filled with the oakum, the outer most portion is filled with hot pitch or heavily tarred oakum to improve the seal. Keeping this up to scratch was a necessary part of life aboard ship ...
