qbm[26] - drained "dipping" pond [HFF]

The circular pond, presumably drained for the winter - with quite a lot of windfall apples to clear up.
According to the guide book, this is a "dipping pond" - filled by water drained off the glass house roof and the shape / dark lining helps to slightly warm the water, which is then "dipped" out by watering cans so the gardeners can supply the kitchen garden & more exotic plants with not-cold water.

Low- lying patch of ground, near to the confluence of the Haltwhistle Burn & the River South Tyne and not far from the old football fields, has filled up with water. It does not appear directly connected to the water courses. tbh, it looks like a toy boating lake ! {I might take some tools & investigate}

First flowers for the marsh marigolds / kingcups, which grow with flag iris in the pond / wetland in the wildwood. The fence I'm leaning over is a fairly recent addition to stop people stepping into the pond ...

The pond / wetland habitat in our wildwood grows a remarkable patch of "marsh marigolds" [ Caltha palustris ] most years, in 2023 the flowers were extensive.

Two memorial benches alongside a wildlife pond. I have seen several people sitting here in contemplation, as well as watching wildlife, including dragonflies.
The pond has waterlilies and other pond weeds, it is also quite deep with steep banks, hence the life ring and board walk / decking.
The pond is on private land with fairly limited access rather than a wildlife reserve as such. I was staying nearby, which allowed me to access the area.

No, it's not plastic !
This is a Grey Heron [Ardea cinerea] standing watch in the decorative pond in Eaton Park, Norwich. It seemed unperturbed by us or another group of people walking by, although it did turn to watch us for a while. Someone in the other group was somewhat startled by the turning head.

A small floating fountain used to aerate this pond, it is moored to stop it drifting around too much when operating. It runs for an hour or so every morning, mid-afternoon and early evening if it has been hot during the day. The affect on water quality and the wildlife has been quite noticeable, and there is a plan to get another one for the further reaches.
The fence is to stop children falling in - there's about a meter drop to the water, and there is quite a lot of pondweed, plus water lilies.

Emperor dragonfly [Anax imperator] laying eggs on what I think is Potamogeton gramineus [various-leaved pondweed] in a large pond in Norfolk.
I had been trying [and failing] to capture images of either the very territorial male dragonfly or the female flying above the pond. Finally, I managed this image and cropped it "in camera".

Overgrown wetland / pond area - the latter is somewhat silted up ... also suffering from a relative lack of recent / winter rain.
I suspect that this coming Autumn we shall have to clean this out again, and re-establish both the pond & the wetland area, as part of the "wildwood" maintenance programme. I don't want to do it in winter, as it will be far too cold for 'plodging' in the mud ! There is also the risk of disturbing hibernating toads etc.

From this angle, the pond looks to be quite a decent area, and with several islands and inlets.

Leaning on the short safety fence and looking into the shallows, [too early for frogspawn !] while Ben investigates ...
This could be a good place for a summer picnic - hopefully, it seems that the sort of people who come here are not prone to dropping litter.

To summarise, the pond was dug in the 1990s and it has become naturalised into the landscape. Wildlife quickly adopted the pond and the islands.

Marsh Marigold, or Mollyblobs are the other common names for the Kingcup. [Caltha palustris]
There is also a blob of frogspawn in the pond ...

The woodland walk around the boundary of our holiday site passed a couple of these deep holes. Not sure what caused them, but I don't think they are natural features - mainly the sides are too steep.
My suspicion is that they are bomb craters from WW2, as there were a lot of targets around here and as it's not in a field or on a road, it wouldn't have been filled in as a matter of urgency, and being in woodland, may well have been missed.
