Approaching the Keep, with the prominent forebuilding that gave access to the Great Hall. . Note the remains of the elaborate decorative arcading - which echoes the William Rufus Keep in Norwich. Also, the ashlar blocks here look very similar to the Caen Limestone used in Norwich.

This water tower, or more specifically, the iron panels making up the actual tank, has deteriorated significantly [hence being fenced off]. This is a tremendous shame, as the size of the tank indicates the relative importance of Hexham as the railway station for an important & busy rural market town with an extensive hinterland, which extended to the Allendale Branch and the Border Counties line areas. The tank in almost double the size of the one in Haltwhistle, 2x4x7 [56] compared to 1x5x7 [35] panels ...

Less usual view of the Alston Arches. . I understand that these "internal arches" were meant to support a wooden cart-carrying / pedestrian bridge. However, this was neve built. At some point early in it's life, an episode of severe flooding brought down the southernmost arch, and it was rebuilt without the cart bridge arch. . Posted to Sunday Challenge [11th June 2023 : Bridges] - mainly as a physical bridge, but in this view it is more of an infinity tunnel !

The stonework underneath the viaduct is formed from some substantial walls - image taken looking along the line of the internal arches in quite sunny weather, so the outside sky is well over-exposed.

Abutment / chain anchorage on the south [English} bank. The seated statue on the left is the bridge's designer, a Royal Navy Captain, Samuel Brown. Although John Rennie was responsible for the stonework. There was a toll booth in the form of a small, two room cottage against the base of this structure. Tolls were payable between 1820 and 1888. Since the cottage was demolished in the 1950s, the layout is indicted by different coloured paving. Note: the stone width markers ! despite having been open for only four months or so, there are several gouges already. Also, only one car is allowed on the bridge at a time ...

The site of the Clinch Brewery Company - originally founded as Lake Brewery in 1779 [I think] A member of the family from the Clinch's Brewery at Witney, Oxfordshire became involved in 1863 ... after a convoluted history with a number of ups and downs the brewery didn't survive WW2. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clinch_%26_Co_Brewery_(Isle_of_Man) to update the wiki ... After a number of decades vacant, there appears to be a bar and grill operating here [2023].

Look closely at the front of this house - the two semi-circular arches suggest that it has been rebuilt from a hemmel. A hemmel is a Northumberland farm building, usually single story, with arches giving access to the sheltered area inside. Frequently used for implements or for hay / winter feed / lambing. Sometimes located out in the fields, rather than in the main farmyard. {Byres are for the animals}

The lower section of a "tower" associated with Wellington Pit (coal mine), surrounded by the eroded remains of coal mining waste and demolition rubble.

South East face of the late 12th century Keep. The modern spiral staircase leads to the original main entrance. The extent of the remaining ashlar stonework allows an appreciation of the monumental nature of the structure. Part of the reason was the area to the left has not been so severely robbed of the ashlar stonework is that the peak cavern gorge is below and, therefore, access is much more difficult. Not to mention that the main garderobe from the keep discharges in that area.

There is definitely a lot of stonework in this tower.

Both hearths and the single flue. I think the nearer hearth is the older and the further one was added later.

Both hearths vent via the one flue (chimney stack). Despite the relatively recent restoration, there are some problems with the stonework - the gable end has a long, vertical split (wider than a crack) and there are a few blocks missing from just above the brick-built arch.
