wst[25] - cars stuck on ice {4th Jan 2025}

06 Jan 2025 10
Modern 4WDs stuck on either Wrynose or Hardnott Pass ... {If they've come from Eskdale, ie going up Hardnott, they will have passed a quite prominent "ROAD CLOSED due to snow & ice" sign.} The closer one looks like a modern LandRover, and appears to have slid backwards before going into the ditch. The one further away looks like it might be a HiLux type pickup, although I'm not at all sure. I expect the Police will have been too polite to express the locals opinion of such behaviour. not my image : fair use & public education

gbw - roadside wall [HWW]

The width of this dry stone wall, and the lack of coping stones indicate that this wall is still acting as a consumption or clearance wall for the neighbouring field. The "wriggle" is to accommodate a "passing place" on the single track lane that allows access to the Wasdale Head Inn.

wst[25] - 12th Jan 2025, about to thaw ...

20 Jan 2025 4 130
We didn't get snowed in, as the gritters had done their job at keeping the roads clear. Just got back from a trip up to Alston [Crossing Cafe / Wooley's] for some food and a bit of a look out. Almost all of this all disappeared overnight as a bank of warmer air arrived ...

This is not snow, but a hoar frost from freezing fog overnight. Originally posted in 2015 or 2016 (I think) and as of 10:30 on 9th Jan 2021 it had 370 views : 5 yellow stars : 5 comments. Today: 9th Jan 2021, the weather outside is very similar, but with added snow and some sunny intervals.

gbw - Grindon Lough and the Stanegate

Grindon Lough - this lake varies in size depending on how much rain has fallen in the past few weeks. This is probably near to the maximum extent, in February 2020. It has no surface outlet, but probably drains out through the ridge of hills to the south [on the right, as this image was taken facing east] The modern road follows the line of the Roman road known as the "Stanegate" along the line, more or less parallel to the top of the same ridge.
